As we think about the Representation Standard, it is important to realize that representations are valuable tools in problem solving, reasoning, and communicating about mathematical ideas. Young students can and should use a variety of representations to show and explain their thinking. We should also remember that representations are not an end in themselves, but rather a fundamental part of the process of learning mathematics. The following diagram shows the relationship between representations and the other Process Standards we have studied so far:
