Evaluating Reasoning and Proof
  Make a Lesson Plan | Summing Up the Session | Final Journal


In a classroom of young children, reasoning entails students having many opportunities to show and explain their thinking. As discussed in previous parts of this session, the foundation for developing reasoning skills begins with patterns and classification.

Use the information you learned in this session to plan a lesson for one of your classes. The task or problem you choose should lend itself to a variety of forms of reasoning mentioned in this session.

Use a problem you teach in your subject area, select one of the samples from the Learning Math courses, or modify or extend a task similar to one we've introduced and explored in this session.

As you plan your lesson, there are a number of things to consider:

What will you do for each "part" of the lesson, including whole-class, small-group, and summary activities? What materials will you use? What activities will help students focus on making conjectures and justifying their thinking by explaining their thinking? What teacher questions should be embedded in the lesson? How will you assess students' progress?

After you have created your lesson plan, use the Classroom Checklist (an Adobe PDF document) to evaluate it.
